Images are a great way to break up text and add visual interest, but if you’re not adding alt text, you’re missing a trick. Alt text helps screen readers describe images to visually impaired users and gives your content a small SEO boost.

If you're blogging in Webflow, here's how to make sure all your images are covered.

Add Alt Text to Images in Rich Text Fields

Images inside rich text fields (like your main blog body) are easy to manage.

  1. Open any blog post in the Webflow Designer.
  2. Click directly on the image inside the rich text block.
  3. A spanner icon will appear – click it to open the image settings.
  4. In the alt text field, ignore the default "get from asset" option and write your own custom description, like “mountain range with a river”.

Do this for each image in the post. It only takes a few seconds and helps both users and search engines.

Add Alt Text to Header or Thumbnail Images

Images that sit outside the main body, like header images or blog thumbnails, need a different approach. These are often controlled via CMS image fields.

Here’s how to add alt text to them:

  1. Go to your Blog Posts CMS Collection and open the settings.
  2. Add a new Plain Text field – name it something like Header Image Alt Text.
  3. Drag this field to sit just under your main image field for clarity.
  4. In the Designer, select the header image element.
  5. In the Element Settings panel, bind the alt text field to this image using the "Get Alt Text From" dropdown.

This makes sure the alt text is dynamic and updates with each post.

Repeat this step on your blog list, resource hub or anywhere else that uses a collection list to show blog thumbnails.

Final Thoughts

It’s a simple tweak, but adding alt text to your blog images can make a real difference. It improves accessibility, strengthens your SEO, and helps keep your site up to best practices.
